The familiar red and white sign of Winn-Dixie, a decades-long staple in the community might soon be replaced by the simple, blue and orange logo of ALDI.

ALDI, the renowned discount supermarket chain, has officially acquired Southeastern Grocers Inc., the parent company of Winn-Dixie, in a move that promises to reshape the grocery shopping landscape in St. Pete, Pinellas County and Tampa Bay.

For years, Winn-Dixie has been a destination for families, but has struggled to keep up with supermarket behemoth Publix. Winn Dixie even attempted a resurgence in the late 2000s with a campaign touting it was “getting better all the time.” Years later, and the winds of change are blowing with ALDI set to bring more of its signature shopping experience to the region.

ALDI expands across the Tampa Bay region

Known for its efficiency, affordability, and commitment to quality, ALDI indicates it has plans to convert a significant number of stores to the ALDI format while also preserving a “meaningful amount” of Winn-Dixie stores as they are. They’ve recently expanded with brand new stores in St. Pete and Tampa

This strategic move is part of ALDI’s ambitious plan to expand its presence in the United States, with the addition of 800 stores by the end of 2028.

“With the successful acquisition of Southeastern Grocers, and the addition of new stores, ALDI will deepen its presence in Florida and the Southeast to offer millions of shoppers a simpler, easier, and more affordable grocery experience,” ALDI stated in a press release.

Slow phasing out of Winn Dixi stores

The transition from Winn-Dixie to ALDI won’t happen overnight. It is a phased approach that will unfold in the months and years ahead. Yet, the promise of up to 40% savings on groceries has already sparked interest and anticipation among St. Pete residents.

As the community awaits further details on which stores will undergo the transformation, sentiment may be mixed. Some may miss the familiarity of Winn-Dixie, while others eagerly anticipate the arrival of ALDI and the savings and simplicity it brings.

Getting better all the time? Perhaps so.
