The Nature of Art | The Overview Effect

October 19, 2023 @ 6:00 pm - 7:00 pm

The overview effect is a cognitive shift reported by some astronauts while viewing the Earth from space. Researchers have characterized the effect as “a state of awe with self-transcendent qualities, precipitated by a particularly striking visual stimulus.”

Those who experience the Overview Effect often describe a shift in perspective, seeing Earth not as divided nations and borders, but as a single, interconnected entity. They feel a profound sense of unity with all of humanity and a responsibility to protect and preserve our planet.

Join us on October 19 at 6 pm as we welcome Space Perspective Co-Founder and CEO Jane Poynter to the MFA. Poynter will discuss the profound impact of the Overview Effect and how she, through Space Perspective, hopes to create the same opportunities for a greater diversity of Explorers, including artists, writers, community leaders, and elected officials—pondering the impact a trip to space may have on the important work they do.

This program is in tandem with the “The Nature of Art” exhibition at the MFA.
