Mosaic making is the oldest form of art practiced for 5000 years. Learn the basis of getting started making mosaics – the tiles (tesserae), the adhesives and the laying of the tiles. It has changed radically through the millennia and the evolution continues. The possibilities are exciting.
Using a combination of lecture/slideshow, drawing, examples, and hands-on mosaic building using stained glass, students will not only create their own mosaic pieces, but more importantly, gain a strong understanding of mosaics as an art form and the fascinating history behind it.
About the Artist
Teresa Sullivan began making mosaics more than 25 years ago after a pivotal trip to Tunisia in 1997. There she walked among the ruins of the Roman Empire and glimpsed the possibilities of this most ancient art form. So began her journey – learning this 5,000 year-old skill. She studies with teachers throughout Italy, Mexico and the United States and teaches mosaics in Florida and Virginia.
