This Tour Covers:
Originally home to farms and orange groves, Round Lake became one of the first “streetcar” suburbs to be developed on the outskirts of the downtown core. Now a National Register Historic District, it still boasts a charming mix of architectural styles including more than 200 Craftsman bungalows.
Residents of Round Lake capitalized on the neighborhood’s proximity to social hubs like the Coliseum and Shuffle Board Club on Mirror Lake by building rooming houses and mother-in-law apartments to cater to tourists in the 1910s and 1920s. Those early 20th-century boarding houses also extended into small courts near Mirror Lake, some of which remain today, tucked away in unseen pockets of the city.
Join historian Monica Kile on a history walking tour to discover what remains of these unique neighborhoods and discuss what the future may hold for them.
