ABOUT RICHARD
I’m a retired Army veteran. I enlisted in the Army as a Private First Class in 1983 and retired as a Brigadier General in 2018 after serving in several conflict zones and two wars. I’m a self-taught artist and work in scratchboard. I’ve been drawing as long as I can remember. I first learned the Scratchboard technique in a high school art class. At the time I was a charcoal portrait artist but picked up scratchboard very quickly. After high school I continued my artwork for a few years but stopped when I joined the Army. I picked it up again in 2010 while serving in a very stressful assignment and needed something to relieve stress. My artwork at that time focused on humanitarian subjects influenced by my Army experiences. The nature of my work in the Army placed me in close contact with civilians and foreign government officials. They shared their experiences living through war, genocide, and
starvation. I felt the impacts of conflict on a very personal level through them. This had a profound influence on my artwork.

Scratchboard has become a self-healing and meditative tool for me. I’ve battled severe depression for years and seem to get lost in the artwork while working on a piece. My work includes people such as Mother Teresa, Diana Spencer, Martin Luther King, Jr., Einstein, Marie Curie, and Presidents Lincoln, FDR, Teddy Roosevelt, Eisenhower, and Reagan. I’ve worked on a variety of pop culture and literature icons. I gifted the portrait I did on the
late Randy Rhoads, founding member of the metal band Quiet Riot and later the lead guitarist for Ozzy Osbourne, to Randy’s sister. She displays it in the family’s Musonia Music School. I recently added wildlife to my portfolio and focus on animals at risk to extinction as a means to raise awareness.
