St. Petersburg native and esteemed graduate of The American University, Kai Tomalin, is set to unveil a captivating art exhibit titled “Dame tus Manos” at The Studio@620 on Saturday, July 22 from 7-9 pm. This thought-provoking collection combines oral histories, hand-painted illustrations, and a storybook narrative to transport visitors into the realm of magical realism, specifically exploring the experiences of the Vargas Family from Colombia.

“Dame tus Manos” offers a unique opportunity to delve into the enchanting world of Colombia through the lens of the artist’s godmother (madrina) and mother (abuelita). Through compelling stories and exquisite watercolor illustrations, the exhibit recounts the lived experiences of the Vargas Family during the 20th century. Their journey was marked by displacement from their homeland following La Violencia, a civil war that forever altered their community, traditions, and physical home.

In an authentic tribute to the Vargas Family’s heritage, Tomalin meticulously crafted the pigments used in the artwork by employing natural materials sourced from the very valley from which the family was displaced. Pigments derived from coffee and mango, turmeric and saffron, spinach, and other natural elements capture the essence of Colombia and symbolize the resilience of those who were forced to flee their homes.

To further enrich the exhibition experience, Tomalin will provide a brief talk at 7:15 pm, offering valuable insights into the inspiration behind “Dame tus Manos.” Prints of the original artwork will be available for purchase during the event, allowing attendees to take a piece of “Dame tus Manos” home with them.

“Dame tus Manos” promises to be an exceptional exhibit that intertwines art and ethnography through Tomalin’s masterful storytelling and hand-painted illustrations. Visitors will be transported to the world of magical realism and gain an appreciation for the strength and resilience of those who have been uprooted from their homes.
