Burg Bits: Petition for Waterfront Soccer Pitch, New Mural on Crescent Lake’s Water Tower

St. Pete: Soccer City

This week, Daniel Williams started a petition for a public soccer pitch along the Burg's waterfront. Our gorgeous park areas already feature outdoor gym equipment, volleyball and tennis courts, and baseball fields. The request for public soccer facilities seems to follow the booming popularity of the Tampa Bay Rowdies, who are currently looking to surge toward a playoff birth at the end of the NASL fall season.

So far the petition has 15 supporters. Click HERE to sign the petition if you feel St. Pete needs soccer fields for its residents. Currently, it's not uncommon to find a group of residents set up their own small nets at North Shore Park to play a quick pick up game. Allowing for a variety of activities (without the hassle of setup/breakdown) could help bring even more residents to our public parks.

1st Annual Crescent Lake Festival

Crescent Lake Park is a go-to spot for avid walkers and cyclists in St. Pete . . . and Pokémon GO Players, too. The scenic park's water tower has long stood as a piece of photogenic history. Bird watchers and families have always been welcome to enjoy early morning picnics and game days. To celebrate this versatile park, the city of St. Pete is hosting the first annual Crescent Lake Festival September 17.

The festival will feature an early morning bird walk, environmental exhibits, live birds, a dedication ceremony for the new water tower mural and more. The event is co-hosted by Darden J. Rice, Friends of Crescent Lake, Chart 411 and Crescent Lake Neighborhood Association. Click HERE for more event details.

Baseball Forever Night Looks to Keep Rays at the Trop

The main topic of conversation surrounding the Tampa Bay Rays over the past few years has been what stadium they'll call home. Poor attendance has lead management of the team to break from their contract at the stadium and seek out a new site for their baseball field.

The City of St. Pete wants to show the Rays why they should remain at their downtown stadium. The Baseball Forever campaign has brought together community leaders and lifelong fans in an effort to show the Rays how much support there is in the Burg. On August 19, residents are encouraged to pack in the stadium for their home game against the Texas Rangers. Two ticket prices available: $25 lower level tickets – free Rays hat with purchase; $10 upper level tickets.

You can purchase a group of tickets (10 or more) by emailing jgallo@raysbaseball.com
