We all know the story of Bruce Wayne, the billionaire orphan who went on to become Batman. Now, for the first time ever, audiences are discovering the true story behind the 1989 film Batman that became a pop culture phenomenon and forever changed the superhero genre. Featuring an award-winning cast, The Boy Who Loved Batman just made its world premiere at the Straz Center’s intimate Jaeb Theater in Tampa, and the highly-anticipated play will be in town until November 10. Tickets are available now, and this is one show we’re more than happy to cross the bridge for.

The Boy Who Loved Batman is an inspiring comedy based on the memoir of Batman film executive producer Michael Uslan, and it tells the incredible true story of one man’s dream that transformed into a national sensation. The new play by Asa Somers is directed by Tony winner Jeff Calhoun (Newsies), and stars David Jenkins in the lead role of Michael Uslan, a role filled by Tony-winner Dan Fogler in the show’s first week.

The Straz describes the sensational new play as “a crazy journey that goes from New Jersey to Hollywood, comic books to the silver screen,” adding that “Every hero needs a hero.” What makes it particularly special is that Tampa is the first stop for what is sure to become an iconic theatre experience. The Straz was able to be a part of the creation process, and Tampa’s fingerprints will be seen in the show when it arrives on Broadway.

Single tickets for The Boy Who Loved Batman start at $75 and may be purchased online at strazcenter.org, in person at the Straz Center Ticket Sales Office, or by calling 813.229.7827.

“We are proud to launch an artistic journey that will take this production from Tampa, to Broadway and far beyond,” said Straz President and CEO Greg Holland. “Tampa Bay audiences are in for a rare treat, as they’ll be the first to witness Tony winner and Hollywood star Dan Fogler embody the role of Michael Uslan. We are proud to undertake the artistic development of this new work and then share it with the world.”
