A St. Petersburg High School, Center for Advanced Technologies (CAT), made it to Newsweek’s list of Best High Schools in America at Rank 15. Only 1,600 schools made it which is just about 6% of all public schools. On top of that, CAT bested all high schools in the Tampa Bay region eventhough Hillsborough had 3 schools making it into the top 100. Note that Hillsborough County has one of the largest school districts in the country.
According to the report, CAT is known for "its progressive program revolving around the practical application of mathematics, science and technology to an increasingly multimedia-focused world. Equipped with Smart Board labs and a state-of-the-art research facility, students can take elective Microsoft IT or engineering classes and can be part of special projects, like the student-produced multimedia program CATCOM. CAT is a magnet, but is housed within Lakewood Senior High school."
