Get your stretchy pants on – St. Pete has a new home for big-time comfort foods. Showcasing a heart-clogging lineup of tasty eats, The Proper Meats is now open at 2462 Central Avenue in the Grand Central District.
Housed in the former location of Freya’s Diner, The Proper Meats is bringing serious down-home eats to the neighborhood with more than a dash of creative flair. The full menu has a wide range of meaty and cheesy dishes, from crispy smashburgers and gargantuan meat platters to jaw-stretching sandwiches and deep-fried starters.

Promising “American comfort funk,” The Proper Meats is open 12-8 pm Wednesday-Saturday, and has a special brunch on Sundays from 11 am – 3 pm. The menu has as much personality as the food it details, offering “Wanna Smashburgers,” “Greens With Envy” (we’ll take the peach chipotle chicken salad), and even a local nod with the “Ybor Hot Byrd“ sandwich (not made with actual Ybor City chickens, we feel confident).
We haven’t been in for a visit yet ourselves, but early reviews have been overwhelmingly positive, and we’re told the smashburgers in particular are star-worthy on their own. We’re already salivating over the “BMAC,” a single smash pattie topped with “Mac the Cheese,” queso, bacon, and pig dust.
More items include the Disco Duck Nachos, Voodoo Dip (made with stewed Florida gator), pickle fries, and The Beef – an 18-hour slow-smoked brisket sandwich. Meat platters are available in pork, chicken, and brisket. Sides include Southern slaw, bbq baked beans, and mac and cheese. We’re also eyeing the Frozen Elvis – a peanut butter mousse cheesecake topped with Heath bar, banana chips, and oreos.
