St. Petersburg’s renowned American Stage kicks off its 47th season with a powerful tribute to one of America’s most iconic musicians—Johnny Cash. The high-energy musical revue, Ring of Fire, features a dynamic five-person ensemble, each playing instruments to bring the Man in Black’s legendary songs to life. Directed by Producing Artistic Director Helen R. Murray, this vibrant celebration of Cash’s legacy enters its final week from October 16 through October 20.
However, due to Hurricane Milton, the production suffered multiple show cancellations as early as opening night. Consider seeing the well-received show before it goes away and support American Stage’s latest season. Beyond that, American Stage has also announced that portion of proceeds from the sale of tickets for the show will go towards those affected by Hurricane Milton. You can buy your tickets here.

An electrifying Ring of Fire setlist at American Stage
Originally premiering on Broadway in 2006, Ring of Fire delivers an electrifying setlist of 38 Cash classics, including hits like “I Walk the Line,” “Country Boy,” “Jackson,” and, of course, “Ring of Fire.”
“When I think of Cash’s songs, I imagine families and communities singing together on front porches and in living rooms,” says Murray. “That’s the atmosphere I want to create at American Stage—the joy, heartbreak, love, and community his music evokes.”
Adding a local touch, St. Pete native Morgan Tapp takes center stage, playing the fiddle and drawing from her deep passion for Americana and bluegrass music. Tapp, who has performed in several American Stage productions, shares her excitement: “Bluegrass and Americana folk music have always been central to my artistic journey. Being part of Ring of Fire, which honors that tradition, is truly thrilling.”
Turning iconic songs into a unique theatrical experience
Joining Tapp on stage are Kara Arena (guitar, dulcimer), Mikhail Roberts (guitar), Troy Brooks (bass, percussion), Tristan Braboy (guitar), and Max Dalton as the swing. Each performer plays their own instruments, creating Cash’s signature sound without relying on impersonation.
“This show isn’t about mimicking Johnny Cash,” Tapp explains. “It takes his timeless music and the themes within it—love, family, and hardship—and transforms them into a unique theatrical experience.”
Whether you’re a lifelong Johnny Cash fan or new to his music, Ring of Fire offers something special. The show celebrates Cash’s journey, from his early days to his rise as a musical icon, resonating with audiences across generations.
