This summer, high school students in St. Petersburg have an exciting opportunity to connect with their community and preserve local culture. Their Stories, Our Voices Youth Griot Program is now accepting applications for its six-week inaugural session in 2025.

In case you’re unfamiliar, a griot is a West African historian, storyteller, praise singer, poet, or musician who preserves history through oral tradition rather than writing. This program will empower students to become modern-day griots, amplifying the voices of Black communities in St. Pete. Applications are open until December 20, 2024.

Bringing local history to life

The program draws inspiration from the words of Dr. Carter G. Woodson, often referred to as the father of Black history. His statement from The Mis-Education of the Negro (1933) underscores the program’s mission: “If a race has no history, if it has no worthwhile tradition, it becomes a negligible factor in the thought of the world, and it stands in danger of being exterminated.”

Through storytelling, the Their Stories, Our Voices program aims to ensure the rich and complex narratives of Black communities in St. Petersburg are preserved and celebrated.

The visionaries behind the program

The program was conceived by Kanika Tomalin, who envisioned creating a meaningful space for young people to engage with history. It is facilitated by Gwendolyn Reese, a renowned historian and the program’s Griot-in-Residence. Reese will mentor students as they explore the stories of local Black elders and historical figures, emphasizing the art and responsibility of preserving these histories for future generations.

What students will gain

Participants will gain hands-on experience in storytelling and digital media creation while developing skills to carry them forward in life and career. Here’s what they can expect:

  • Historical Exploration: Students will attend workshops led by local elders and community leaders, gaining invaluable insights into St. Petersburg’s Black history.
  • Skill Development: With expert guidance, participants will learn how to craft compelling narratives and create digital content to share those stories, whether through writing, video, or multimedia.
  • Financial Support: To ensure that all students can participate, the program offers a $1,000 stipend upon successful completion, making this a truly accessible opportunity.
