The St. Petersburg Housing Authority (SPHA) is teaming up with the City of St. Petersburg to launch the Rising Stars Midnight Basketball Showcase—an exciting new youth program using the power of basketball to inspire, empower, and build community.
This dynamic co-ed tournament takes place on Saturday, April 12, 2025, from 5 p.m. – 9 p.m. at the Thomas “Jet” Jackson Recreation Center (1000 28th St S). Admission is free, and the public is encouraged to come out and cheer on the city’s rising stars.

A youth basketball program blending competition and mentorship
Designed for youth ages 11 to 17, the showcase features two divisions—one for players aged 11–13 and another for those aged 14–17. More than just a game, this high-impact program blends competition with mentorship, leadership training, and life skills development.
Michael Lundy, President and CEO of SPHA, knows firsthand how sports can shape a young person’s future. “I remember—long ago—basketball was the hook for me,” said Lundy. “It kept me out of trouble. It gave me structure and taught me skills. As I got older, I realized there’s a real connection between basketball and life. You have to practice, show up on time, follow rules, take direction, and work as a team. Those are life skills.”
Spearheaded by Kiara Lovett, SPHA’s Director of Social Services, the Rising Stars program aims to do exactly that: develop well-rounded youth who succeed on the court and in life.
Meaningful opportunities for St. Pete youths
“We’re proud to partner with the City of St. Petersburg to create meaningful opportunities for our youth,” said Lovett. “This is about building future leaders. We want them to sharpen their skills and discover qualities that carry far beyond basketball.”
The Rising Stars Midnight Basketball Showcase champions more than athletic talent. It champions resilience, responsibility, and a vision for success. With a focus on mentorship and character-building, the program pushes young athletes to grow into confident, purpose-driven leaders in their communities.
