The Open Road Photo Exhibit at The Museum of Fine Arts (Feb. 9 – Jun. 4)
The Open Road explores the photographic road trip as a genre. It traces the rise of road culture in America and considers photographers on the move across the country and across the century, from the mid-1950’s to present day. Beginning with Robert Frank’s seminal odyssey, The Americans, and including such renowned work as Ed Ruscha’s Twentysix Gasoline Stations, Inge Morath’s The Road to Reno, Lee Friedlander’s American Monument, Garry Winogrand’s 1964, Joel Sternfeld’s American Prospects, Stephen Shore’s Uncommon Places, and Alec Soth’s Sleeping by the Mississippi, The Open Road is a visual tour de force, presenting the story of photographers for whom the American road is muse. Exhibition organized by Aperture Foundation, New York. David Campany and Denise Wolff, curators. The photos will be on display from February 9 through June 4. Sacred Art Tour of Tibetan Monks at Florida CraftArt (All Weekend)
Eight Tibetan monks from the Drepung Gomang Monastery in India will bring teachings of ancient ways and beliefs that create the possibility of global peace, non-violent conflict resolution, compassion and wisdom. This visit is part of the monk’s nationwide 2017 Sacred Arts Tour, formed to share and preserve the spiritually artistic expression of the Tibetan culture. The monks demonstrate and express their peaceful ways through living art, ritual, dance and chanting. At 3:45pm on Friday the public is invited to a meditation and chanting ceremony. Hot Date in the Hot Shop at Morean Glass Studio and Hot Shop
The evening will begin with an instructional demonstration, after which each couple will have a hands-on experience culminating in 1 piece of glass (a solid sculpted paperweight or a blown-glass ornament) made by the two of you in collaboration. The piece will be available for pick-up or shipment the following day. Proper attire for working in the Hot Shop is pants, comfortable t-shirt or long sleeve shirt, and comfortable, closed-toed shoes. On the heels of the sold–out Alice’s Restaurant 50th Anniversary Tour, Arlo Guthrie plunges into another musical trip certain to be a flashback-inducing, mind-expanding show. Coast Bike Share Launch and Community Ride
Join Deputy Mayor Kanika Tomalin, members of City Council, the Coast crew and all of your bike-loving friends and neighbors as they celebrate the official launch of Coast Bike Share in St. Pete with a FREE group ride ending at Localtopia! Meet at the City Hall hub at 8:30am on Saturday for Kahwa coffee and opening speeches before embarking on a community ride along the waterfront. At the end of the ride, be part of the official bike share ribbon cutting as they Coast through a banner at the opening of Localtopia. TFO Gala Featuring Itzhak Perlman at The Mahaffey
Undeniably the reigning virtuoso of the violin, Itzhak Perlman is a rare classical superstar, beloved for his charm and humanity as well as his talent. Among his numerous honors, Mr. Perlman is a recipient of the Presidential Medal of Freedom, a Kennedy Center Honoree, as well as a 15-time Grammy and four-time Emmy winner. He has performed multiple times at the White House, including the 2009 inauguration of President Obama.
