Then & Now: Roots of The ‘Burg Part I

This series is dedicated to the histroic structures and architectual rhapsodies that compliment and color St. Pete.  The photos were generously provided  by the St. Petersburg Museum of History.  For more photos detailing the history and maturation of the ‘Burg scroll through their photo stream or visit them at 335 2nd Ave NE.

The State Theatre

The State Theatre, located at 687 Central Ave in downtown St. Pete, brings some of the most renowned artists and musicians to the city and has been doing so since 1949.  The Theater was constructed in 1924 and up until ’49 had housed several different banks.  A few changes in ownership and a stock market crash later it finally became the musical beacon we know and love today.

Open Air Post Office

The Open Air Post Office was constructed in 1916 by George W. Stewart.  Located at 76 4th St N, this was the first open air post office in the nation and was added to the national registry of historic places in April of ’75.  It has maintained its Italian architectual influence and continues to be a concrete point of nostalgia in St. Pete.

The St. Petersburg Pier

"The Pier’s history dates back to 1889, when the Orange Belt Railway contructed the Railroad Pier on Tampa Bay as a railway-accessible sightseeing and recreational resort for locals and tourists, 3 years prior to the ‘Burg’s incorporation as a city in 1892" via Wiki.  The Pier has seen severl shifts in structre and title over the years from the Electric Pier in 1906, The Municipal Pier in 1914, The Million Dollar Pier in 1926 after a vicious hurricane in ’21 and finally the Inverted Pyramid constructed in ’73.  A monument we still argue and debate over to this day.
