St. Pete Officials Better Environment, Community Through New Programs

St. Pete Officials Better Environment, Community Through New Programs

100% St. Pete

St. Pete is the sunshine city, so it's only natural that city officials would take action to help St. Pete residents take advantage of reusuable energy. "The sun trully is shining on us here today and it's way past time we capture it and put it to good use" said Mayor Rick Kriseman. "We embrace our legacy as the first green city in the state. We've committed to the establishment of a net zero energy goal in joining the star communities, signing the declaration of local leadership in support of one-hundred percent renewable energy."

Kriseman made these remarks on the steps of City Hall to help introduce the community to St. Pete's solar cooperative. FL SUN, which is supported by the Community Power Network, will serve as the platform for the St. Pete Solar Co-Op. The purpose of this concept is to help solar electricity/photovoltaics affordable and accessible for residents and business owners. The Co-Op is part of the Sierra Club's 100% St. Pete campaign. On Thursday, July 28, members of the new cooperative will gather at the Sunshine Center Auditorium for an educational seminar. Registration for the Co-Op is currtently open. The city invests in its future with the launch of Not My Son, a grassroots community engagement effort to help African American youths and young adults in St. Pete. It's a fufillment of a promise Kriseman made earlier in 2016 to help take back neighborhoods from violence. The awareness campaign will be geared to help educate kids and teens and their parents about ways to stop crime before it happens. Kriseman has already put $1 million toward the campaign. Help is also on the way in the form of federal grants job training and mentoring programs.

With the launch of "Not My Son," St. Pete joins 250 cities across the nation working to better their communities for their residents. Groups will visit different parts of the St. Pete community every Friday to raise awareness about the city's efforts.
