With hurricane season underway, the City of St. Petersburg is offering extra days for residents to pick up sandbags during non-emergency times. Sandbags are available at the Pavement and Traffic Operations Building (1744 9th Ave. N) on the second Saturday of each month, including Saturday, August 10, from 7am-3:30pm.
The City recently distributed 31,000 sandbags in preparation for Hurricane Debby. Residents are encouraged to pick up sandbags early to avoid long lines when a storm approaches.
Sandbags are just one aspect of preparing for a storm
Regular sandbag distribution hours are Monday through Friday and the second Saturday of the month, from 7am to 3:30pm. These hours will continue until further notice. During storm emergencies, distribution locations and hours will be updated at stpete.org/Sandbags.
Each household can receive up to 10 sandbags, and proof of St. Pete residency is required.
Important info for Electric Vehicle owners
If you own an electric vehicle (EV), it’s important to prepare it properly for a storm. Keep your EV’s battery fully charged if you plan to evacuate, but avoid relying on charging stations along the way as they may be unavailable. Never drive through flood water, as it can damage the battery and potentially lead to a fire, which could occur immediately or even months later.
If leaving your EV behind, park it out of flood-prone areas, at least 50 feet from any structure or other vehicles, and keep the battery charge below 30%. After the storm, do not attempt to drive or charge an EV that has been submerged in water, and be sure to dispose of any lithium-ion batteries exposed to floodwaters properly—never in regular trash.
