St. Petersburg is launching the Healthy Homes Initiative, aimed at increasing public awareness and reducing risks from household lead exposure. The initiative will kick off with the Healthy Homes Community Coalition Kickoff Meeting on Thursday, January 23, from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at Pinellas Technical College (901 34th St. S.).

In partnership with the Pinellas County Health Department, the City of St. Petersburg will work with local residents to promote education about the dangers of lead paint, which still affects many homes, especially in the South St. Petersburg Community Redevelopment Area (CRA). The initiative’s goal is to eliminate lead-based hazards, which can lead to lifelong health problems, particularly in children.

Creating healthy homes is essential for the well-being of all residents

Dr. Avery Slyker, St. Pete’s Housing and Community Development Director, emphasized the importance of addressing lead hazards: “Creating healthy homes is essential for the well-being of our city residents,” she said. “Protecting children from lead exposure ensures every home is a safe, nurturing environment.”

Key components of the initiative include:

  • Lead Renovation, Repair, and Paint Certification: Contractors can earn training to safely work in homes with lead-based paint.
  • Lead Reduction Grant Program: Homeowners in the South St. Petersburg CRA can apply for grants to remove lead-based hazards from their homes.

This initiative is part of the City’s broader Housing Opportunities For All Plan, launched by Mayor Ken Welch to address rising housing costs and create safer, more affordable living spaces for all residents.
