The St. Pete French Fry Guide

The St. Pete French Fry Guide

French fries are one of those hit-or-miss foods. A hot, crispy fry is nearly euphoric, but a soggy, starchy wedge can leave you with dry mouth and a day’s worth of wasted calories. If you‘ve ever tasted the ‘smiley fries’ in your middle school cafeteria, you know exactly the type of terrible we’re talking about.

Luckily for you fry enthusiasts, however, St. Pete has a laundry list of restaurants with the classic spud down to a science. And even better? We’ve already tried them so you don’t have to waste any time finding a perfect batch.

Curious which local potatoes reign supreme? Here is a list of our top 10 favorite fries in the ‘Burg.

The fries:

Mullet’s Fish Camp

Fish and chips are a classic pairing, so it makes sense that St. Pete’s hottest new seafood spot would serve a solid fry. Long, crispy and covered in Cajun spice, we highly recommend ordering an entrée with these tasty taters included.

Zaytoon Grill

The fries at Zaytoon Grill are cut fresh every day, which already makes them great. The addition of Mediterranean spices on top of that freshness, however, makes them truly unique. At only $3 an order, we never stop by without grabbing a batch.

1618 Central Ave

Fresco’s Waterfront Bistro

Fresco’s Waterfront Bistro has absolutely nailed the crunchy-on-the-outside yet hot and soft on the inside type of fry. If you’re looking for a classic, family friendly fry—with sweet oceanside views—these bad boys are definitely the spuds for you.

300 2nd Ave NE

Better Byrd

For years, McDonalds has served America’s favorite fast food fry. If you’re part of team #goldenarches, then you’ll love the fries at Better Byrd.

Thin and perfectly greasy, these potatoes are as close as you’ll find to the chain restaurant classic in the ‘Burg.

The German Knodle

With 4.8 stars on Google and a perfect score on Yelp, you can safely assume that everything at The German Knodle tastes good. Their fries, though, are in a league of their own. Thick and crispy, they make the perfect vessel for soaking up the restaurant’s delicious European sauces.

951 Central Ave

Twisted Indian

Twisted Indian’s “Yogi Fries” are certainly not your average spuds. Outside of their cool, twisty shape, they come covered in tikka masala sauce, mozzarella cheese, tangy slaw, raita yogurt sauce and cilantro.

And if that’s not enough sloppy goodness for you? The restaurant will even add chicken or paneer on top.

2639 Central Ave

The Left Bank Bistro

The Left Bank Bistro is St. Pete’s premier French restaurant, so it makes sense that the understated venue would serve some of the best fries around.

Salty and floppy in true “steak frites” style, these artisan fries have a sophisticated flavor that differentiates them from their competitors.

1225 Dr M.L.K. Jr St N

Dead Bob’s Bar

No one does fries like a good old bar and grill, and—when it comes to bars—Dead Bob’s is a St. Pete classic.

With crunchy brown edges and a perfectly warm interior, Dead Bob’s fries are a whole new level of tasty. If you’re chilling watching a sports game or having a cool beer with friends, a batch of these are a center-table necessity.

6717 Central Ave N

The Boardwalk Grill

The Boardwalk Grill has a fantastic menu of fresh, sizable plates, but their most famous offering is inarguably their massive, hand-cut boardwalk fries.

Completely different than typical fast food or diner fries, these wedges look as if an entire potato was thrown into directly into a slicer, skin and all. On the menu they’re offered as a side dish, but—with some cheese sauce or horseradish mayo—they’re definitely big enough to be a meal in themselves.

204 John’s Pass Boardwalk, Madeira Beach

Noble Crust

To put it simply: Noble Crust’s “Parmesan Truffle Fries” are—like everything else on the  menu—fantastic.

On their own, these fries are crispy, aromatic and well-seasoned. Pair them with the restaurant’s house-made truffle aioli, however, and they just might be the best in the ‘Burg.
