St. Pete’s sweetest competition is back this August, as The Great St. Pete Cupcake Contest returns for its 11th delicious year. The bake-off is hosted at the Morean Center for Clay (420 22nd Street South) on Saturday, August 27 from 12-3 pm.
The city-wide search for St. Pete’s best cupcake is an annual favorite, and includes five different cupcake categories. Timed admission tickets are available in advance, which includes unlimited votes and a to-go container for mini-cupcakes (12-pack or 24-pack offered). Ticket options are for the timed GA window pickup time (1-3 pm) or the early window from 12-1 pm, guaranteeing first choice to some of the most popular flavors and beautifully decorated cupcakes.
First and second place awards will be given in each category, including Novice, Professional, Youth/Teen (Ages 10-16), Specialty (Gluten Free or Vegan), and of course, the People’s Choice. The People’s Choice award will be voted on by the attending audience via digital survey. Votes will be tallied and winner of the People’s Choice Award announced at midnight on the 27th.
Last year’s People’s Choice winner was Rachel Gelbmann and her Chocolate Guinness Pretzel Cake, who also took first place in professional judging. I Love the Burg has been proud to participate as judges since the event’s inception, and we’re looking forward to another round of sweet treats.
While the People’s Choice will, of course, be voted on by attendees, the remaining categories will be selected by a panel of judges, including I Love the Burg’s own Rob Sanchez. Cupcakes will be judged on icing/frosting, flavor/texture and presentation/creativity for a total of 50 points, allowing plenty of room for edible creativity.
