St. Pete Beach Theatre hosting outdoor film series ahead of reopening

Exterior of a movie palace with a tall blue marquee, and a white facade. An empty ticket counter is visible.

Slowly but surely, The St. Pete Beach Theatre is coming back! The Beach Theatre and the City of St. Pete Beach are excited to announce the first films played under their banner in ten years: a 100th birthday tribute to the incomparable Judy Garland.

Over four Wednesday evenings in June, The Beach Theatre will take a look at four iconic Judy performances under the stars of Horan Park. The team behind the revitalization of the local movie palace are excited to give residents and visitors a glimpse of the specially-curated programming you’ll come to expect when they reopen their doors later in 2022.

Admission to the outdoor film screenings is free! There will be food and beverage options available for purchase, with a portion of the proceeds benefitting The Beach Theatre Community Foundation. Vintage movie posters will be available for a donation as well.

St. Pete Beach Theatre making its return to Corey Avenue

The first movie theater in Pinellas County to be equipped with sound and (perhaps most importantly) air conditioning, the theater has since become a beloved landmark for St. Pete Beach. Across eight decades, it presented the best in independent and international cinema, establishing itself as Pinellas County’s premiere arthouse movie theater.

What’s more, it stood as an anchor for the community, giving local artists a space to create and showcase their talent both on the screen and the stage, making lasting memories for generations.

All screenings will begin at 8pm. Here’s the full Judy Garland lineup:

  • June 1: The Wizard of Oz
  • June 8: The Clock
  • June 15: Summer Stock
  • June 22: A Star is Born

Organizers recommend bringing chairs and blankets—beach or otherwise!—for maximum viewing comfort. Food trucks, including fresh craft popcorn from Urban Popcorn, as well as beverages from Mastry’s Brewing Company and The Spice & Tea Exchange, will be on-site and will begin serving at 7:00pm.

Horan Park is located at 7701 Boca Ciega Drive.
