Sauvignon debuts one of downtown’s best weekday lunches

Ever since its opening, Sauvignon Wine Locker & American Trattoria has been a must-visit for foodies and winos alike, dishing up incredible hand-made pasta dishes, premium steaks, and an incredible wine selection. Now, the downtown star is filling in the only piece of its repertoire that had been missing: weekday lunch.

Sauvignon debuted its Tuesday-Friday lunch in January, and we recently got our first taste. The initial review: absolutely fantastic. With its combination of quality ingredients, filling portions, and perfectly reasonable pricing, it may be the best lunch spot in downtown St. Pete. Without question, it’s one of the tastiest.

The new menu showcases many of the things for which the restaurant is so celebrated, as well as some new approaches that fit into the lunch scene. Lunch at Sauvignon showcases the starters and handmade pasta dishes we all love (including some new additions, such as a delicious warm olives and confit garlic plate, and a tantalizing house-made pate de foie gras), plus some massive new dinner-sized salads. The Chophouse Salad is more than a full meal on its own.

Of course, it’s the mains where things get particularly exciting. From sandwiches, choice meats, and even Peruvian tacu tacu, the options dazzle from start to finish. Perhaps the most surprising (and filling) new dish is the Creekstone Farms Philly Cheesesteak. Made with Creekstone Farms Angus tenderloin, the quality of the meat is impeccable, paired with house-made cheese whiz, grilled peppers and onions, and a perfectly toasted roll. It’s an amazing sandwich, and is enough for two meals if you’re able to stop yourself from finishing the whole thing.

Sauvignon’s filet is must-try

Let this also be an opportunity to wax poetic about the steak itself at Sauvignon. They’re known, justifiably, for their fantastic pasta dishes, stunning charcuterie boards, and deep selection of wines. But we would put their steak up against anyone’s in town. The 8-oz lunch filet, served with a mushroom-port reduction and silky garlic mashed potatoes, is an incredible meal no matter the time of the day. The tender and juicy steak is a perfectly-sized meal to enjoy a little decadence without succumbing to an afternoon food coma.

Our lunch at Sauvignon also gave us our first interaction with tacu tacu, a fantastically flavorful vegan and Peruvian dish. The tacu tacu is a spiced and lightly fried rice-and-bean cake, served with roasted mushrooms, chimichurri, and huancaina. The entire ensemble is bursting with flavor and offers a light-but-filling lunchtime option.

Sauvignon’s lunch is available Tuesday-Friday from 11 am – 3 pm. Reservations can be made at sauvignonstpete.com. Check out the full lunch menu here. And one last recommendation: Sauvignon may not be the first place you’d think of for a great burger, but their Angus Burger, made with a fresh-ground blend of prime ribeye and filet, is a stunner. The combo of high quality meat with all our favorite burger toppings makes it one of downtown’s best. Also, don’t skip dessert

If you need even more reasons to visit, the Tuesday-Sunday happy hour, running from 4-6 pm, offers half-off wine by the glass, along with an excellent happy hour food menu (we recommend the meatballs). Plus, on Thursdays, Sauvignon offers 50% off handmade pasta dishes and salads. On Tuesdays and Wednesdays, all hospitality employees receive 50% off their food bill. Any time you visit, you can find a great deal.

Sauvignon also has an outstanding weekend brunch available every Saturday and Sunday. The bananas foster French toast is truly a highlight. And on Sundays, enjoy half-off bottles of wine priced under $125. Sauvignon Wine Locker & American Trattoria is located at 241 Central Avenue and is open for lunch and dinner Tuesday-Sunday.
