Olympics for Dogs Comes to the ‘Burg This Weekend

The dog days of summer aren’t quite upon us yet, but this weekend will be all about our four-legged friends as more than 70 pooches take over Spa Beach Park in downtown St. Pete for the 2013 Purina Pro-Plan Incredible Dog Challenge Eastern Regionals.

Think of it like the Olympics for dogs. The competitors will be participating in a variety of skills that highlight athleticism and intelligence including Jack Russell hurdle racing and dual weave course racing. There is the diving dog challenge, which is a long jump for man’s best friend with a splash ending. A particular crowd favorite is the freestyle disc competition where the canine competitor works seamlessly with their human handler to showcase a unique and fun routine of disc catching and discipline.

There will be three hometown dogs to cheer on from the Tampa Bay region as things get underway Friday at 9am. The competition often has an international flair as well, with teams coming from Japan, Germany, and the Czech Republic. The two-day event continues on Saturday beginning at 11:15 am and will be broadcast nationally on May 11 on CBS. The Incredible Dog Challenge Finals will take place in Gray Summit, Missouri, on October 4-5, 2013.

Can I get a woof woof?!
