NPR’s StoryCorps Listens to the ‘Burg’s Stories

National Public Radio’s StoryCorps MobileBooth is parked in front of the Museum of Fine Arts, 255 Beach Dr. SE, and is waiting to record your story! StoryCorps records anybody who wants to set up an interview and is one of largest oral history projects of its kind. We at iLovetheBurg.com took a stroll down to the trailerable studio to get the inside scoop. Grey-eyed and friendly Eliza Bettinger, the MobileBooth Advance Coordinator, answers our hesitant knock on the metallic metal door and we chat.

“We travel all over the country,” Eliza says. “We’ve been to Tampa and Sarasota before, so we thought we’d try somewhere new.”

Each interview is archived in the Library of Congress and a select few, less than 1% according to Eliza, make it onto national radio broadcasts listened to by millions on NPR’s Friday Morning Edition. According to the StoryCorps website, the project has interviewed over 90,000 people in 1,700 cities and towns across America. 54 different languages are represented and the archive is made up of a whopping 18 terabytes of data. The interviews have provided material for two New York Times bestselling books and even animated adaptations (see below).

Interviews are in such high demand that the posted time slots for the MobileBooth are already full!

“Everyone is welcome to sign up on the waiting list. All our current interview slots are full until January 7th when we’ll be adding more,” Eliza assures us. We let Eliza get back to the business of setting up the studio and head back to the office. Our lives flash before our eyes: the first kiss, that crazy roommate in college, when grandpa died…

What would you say during a 40-minute interview? There’s only one way to find out. To sign up for the waiting list, view the new time slots when they open on January 7th or listen to the StoryCorps wealth of stories, visit storycorps.org or call 800-850-4406.
