The Burg is a beautiful place to live, work and play; however, that doesn’t mean residents don’t get bitten by the travel bug from time to time. Tampa International Airport continues to make headlines with the addition of nonstop services to and from major travel destinations in the U.S. and abroad.
We decided to provide you with a quick list of recent announcements/launches just in case you’re in need of a spring break escape.
Salt Lake City, Utah
The airport just announced that daily, year-round nonstop service between Tampa and Salt Lake City would begin in December 2017 aboard Delta Airlines. This city has been one of the top target markets on TPA’s list. The airport speculates that the service will generate more than $16 million in economic impact. Flights officially launch on Dec. 21. Icelandair will launch twice weekly service between Tampa and Reykjavik in September of 2017. Reykjavik is the country’s capital and largest city. It’s also home to a bucket list item of many world travelers, the Blue Lagoon Spa.
Queens, New York
New York’s LaGuardia Airport in Queens is the number one market for the Tampa Bay community. Southwest Airlines looks to capitalize on the area’s business and vacation interests in the Northeast by offering daily nonstop flights to LaGuardia Airport with fares starting as low as $89. Flights will depart TPA at 5:40am and 2:35pm, and return flights from LaGuardia will depart at 8:55am and 6:15pm. The service should begin early this summer. San Francisco, California
When United Airlines announced in July of 2016 that they would begin nonstop service from Tampa to San Francisco a dream was fully realized for TPA staff members. San Francisco not only provides major tourism opportunities for residents, but it also opens up the developing economy of Tampa Bay to the tech hub on the West coast. Before the nonstop service began, 600 people traveled daily between the two regions, rendering the TPA to SFO connection the most underserved route in America.
The service launched in February of this year to wild popularity. The 737-800 aircraft features 16 first class seats and 150 economy and economy plus seats. The flights depart San Francisco daily at 8:30am and arrive in Tampa at 4:51pm; the flights depart Tampa at 5:50pm and arrive in San Francisco at 8:45pm. Visit United Airlines’ website to book your fight.
Nonstop flights between Tampa and Havana began on Dec. 12, 2016. The historic connection served as a travel milestone for TPA. Tampa has the nation’s third largest Cuban-American population and, before the flights began, 6,000+ people signed a petition that was submitted for the Department of Transportation’s consideration in Southwest’s request for the service.
Charter service to Cuba has been available at TPA since 2011. In that time, more than 300,000 people have taken advantage of the option. Flights depart from Tampa at 6:15am and depart Cuba at 6:05pm/11:15pm. You can book your flight on Southwest’s website.
