This free, family-friendly gem delights visitors of all ages with its rideable model trains. Operating on the first full weekend of every month, the Largo Central Railroad invites residents and visitors to hop aboard and experience the magic of miniature railroading at its finest.

I love trains, and any activity that can instill an early love of this transit option from a young age is pure magic in my opinion.

A dream ride for train enthusiasts in Largo

Since 1991, the all-volunteer group behind the Largo Central Railroad has shared their passion with the community. After striking a deal with the City of Largo, the group built more than a mile of track through the park and committed to offering public rides monthly.

The experience is nothing short of delightful. Each 15-minute trip winds riders through beautiful landscapes, sweeping curves, and a tunnel. It’s a peaceful, scenic journey that feels like a true escape — yet it’s only a short drive from downtown St. Pete.

“These trains are 1/8th scale, they run on a very wide track, and they are big enough you can sit and ride on,” said Jim O’Connor, one of the directors of Largo Central Railroad, in an interview with Fox 13 News. “This is the ultimate in model railroading. Anything bigger is real trains.”

How to ride the train

When you arrive at Largo Central Park, go to the tan-roofed shelter on the park’s east side. There, you’ll find iPads where you can quickly sign the electronic release form if you haven’t already done so at home.

After signing, follow the simple instructions and head toward the boarding area. Rides are free, but donations are warmly appreciated to help keep the trains running for future generations.

Upcoming ride weekends for 2025 include:

  • May 3 & 4
  • June 7 & 8
  • July 5 & 6
  • August 2 & 3
  • September 6 & 7
  • October 4 & 5
  • November 1 & 2
  • December 7 (one day only)

Train hours are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturdays and 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Sundays. Be sure to arrive early — the line closes 15 minutes before closing time.
