Halloween decorations honor the dogs that have died at Florida tracks

Every year, residents all over St. Pete decorate their homes with spooky ghouls and jack-o’-lanterns in the spirit of the season. With so many eyes on the decked out lawns, one resident saw an opportunity to relay a message to St. Pete about a serious issue. That issue is dog racing.

St. Pete resident Melissa Zepeda decided this year to honor the dogs that have lost their lives at dog tracks in Florida.

“After I learned how many dogs had died from racing on Florida tracks I wanted to create a display to honor the dogs who needlessly and cruelly died from broken legs and backs,” writes Zepeda. “Our yard wasn’t big enough to honor all 490+ dogs who have died on all FL dog tracks so i named the dogs who died on the dog track here in St Pete.”

Zepeda hopes the display will serve as a reminder to vote for Amendment 13 on the ballot in Florida this November.
