Food and Resto Updates (11.08.11)

Gourmet Burgers for ‘Burgers
First Avenue South is making inroads on the Food and Resto scene, with three new venues getting ready to open on the South side of the Avenue between 3rd and 4th Streets. First on the scene is the Avenue eat / drink, which opens its kitchen (and its bar) this Friday night at 5pm.

Ostensibly an upscale, late night burger joint, the Avenue is offering patties that are several cuts above the mundane.

The menu is loaded with twenty(!) reasonably-priced variations on the burger theme. Prices start at $6 for a sandwich adorned by only the usual toppings, and go up to $10.50 for the "Lucy Juicy"; a quarter pound of angus stuffed with your choice of cheese. Our interests were piqued by the "Cali," at $9, with chipotle mayo, avocado and swiss, and the Cajun Crabcake Burger, that features lump crab.

Toppings range from the usual to the clever; tomatoes, onions and cheeses can be paired with everything from peperroni to sauerkraut. Even pineapple joins the list. A plethora of sauces all sound mouth-watering. A few notables are apple cider, spicy cheese, buffalo, ranch and bleu cheese.

The substitutions are a great departure from the norm, as well. Ahi Tuna burger, anyone? Buffalo and lamb are other great options. For anyone whose tastebuds aren’t satsfied with the burger extravaganza, wraps are also available, but not in such wide variety. Philly cheesesteak and chicken pesto are two of the offerings. Clever variations on the standard mac & cheese include buffalo chicken and crab mac.

For us who like to pair with drinks, the Avenue has a modest beer menu, some decent wines and eight, cleverly-named cocktails. "Trust Issues", anyone?

The salads seem fairly typical, until you notice that you can add a wide variety of meats, from buffalo chicken to actual buffalo meat.

For breakfast, served from 11am-3pm Thursday to Saturday–and all day Sunday–the menu includes all the basics, such as eggs, pancakes and french toast, as well as a good selection of breakfast bowls and burritos. The dessert menu is sweet, too. Cupcakes, peaches-n-cream, red velvet cake, cookies and cream, and a chocolate volcano cake are a few of the notables.

World of Beer Is Opening Very Soon
The World of Beer moves one step closer to downtown St. Pete, building out a location just to the West of the Avenue which we’ve been told will open on the 21st of this month. In case you haven’t checked out the existing ‘Burg location (5226 N. 4th St.) or any of the other 16 WOBs in Florida alone, and another 12 on the way throughout the country–the WOB is aptly named, with literally hundreds of different brews to try.

Suite! Six is Here
For all you cool cats of the ‘Burg–and your friends stuck in Tampa–there’s going to be a new venue at 265 Central Ave. According to DJ Fresh, Director of Entertainment at Suite Six, the new lounge, will be designed to mimic the cool, chic lobby in your fave hotel.

"It’ll be very comfortable, kind of a mashup between a bar and a lounge crowd. There will be a dress code, but [it will be] upscale, not snooty. You know, St. Pete’s a boating community. A beach town. If someone shows up in khakis, we won’t be throwing him out."

Suite Six will offer both table and bottle service and a limited menu of cocktail party fare. Emphasis will be on the drinks, with a good selection of beer, an eclectic wine list, specialty martinis and six signature cocktails. And, of course, entertainment. They’ve already planned for special guest DJs from around the country, live music, jazz night, and celebrity hosted parties and events.

According to them, Suite Six will pay homage to the historic legacy of Central, the Avenue formerly known as Sixth.

Not Enough Chefs in the Kitchen
A little birdie (AKA, signs in the window at Jannus Landing) tells us that the spoons will soon be rattlng in the Kitchen.

Judging by what Brittanny herself told us, the restaurant at Jannus Live will be a little more eclectic than you might be expecting, offering steak, seafood and sushi on the menu. If you’re looking for a job, get those résumés in now.

The Kitchen will be located at 200 1st Ave. N.

*You have to be 21 or over to drink alcohol. Do not drink and drive.
