One of St. Pete’s biggest free events is back. After a two-month hiatus – and a near shutdown – First Friday is back in downtown, beginning this Friday, January 5. The monthly event, hosted on Central Avenue between 2nd and 3rd Streets, shuts down the road to traffic for a massive block party with music, food, drink, games and more.

First Friday was in the headlines recently for the news that the long-running monthly party was at best taking a break, and at worst may have to shut down for good, as a result of the $12K monthly price tag. In response to the news, several local businesses stepped up to ensure the downtown celebration would continue.

In fact, every business on the block – from Mary Margaret’s to Pelican Pub – is now helping to sponsor the event. A handful of local businesses have gone even farther above and beyond, as CMK Construction and My Florida Bath joined on as sponsors, and Forward Hospitality (owners of Goodnight John Boy and Welcome To The Farm, both on the Jannus Block) stepped forward to help ensure the party around the corner would continue. 22N Nightlife Productions is helping to bring entertainment to the street festival, while Great Bay Distributors are continuing to ensure great drinks are available.

January’s First Friday takes place this Friday, January 5 starting at 6 pm, complete with live music by 22N and a lineup of food trucks, local vendors, a 50/50 raffle, and specials from the bars and restaurants on the block. As part of the festivities, those 21 or older are able to purchase and carry drinks outdoors throughout the event area.

While First Friday has long been a popular party, and a huge economic driver for businesses in the area, the road to get back wasn’t easy. In fact, it was just one year ago that First Friday returned from a two-year hiatus. The Optimists Club ran the event for years, but it shut down, like many other events and businesses, after the onset of covid. The group taking charge now has seen a successful 12 months, and the latest sponsorships are ensuring the party continues.

To that end, organizers tell us that the bars and restaurants in the area have been extremely supportive and helpful in helping make the event a success, and additional sponsorships for the event are available, as well. Follow First Friday on facebook and Instagram for more updates.
