Derived from the blue agave plant, the spirit is primarily distilled in the area surrounding the city of Tequila, and the Jaliscan Highlands in the central western Mexican state of Jalisco. Tequila is recognized as a Mexican designation of origin product and makes up half of the spirits currently sold in the U.S.
