ANYTOWN® 2022 (Session 1)

June 20 @ 8:00 am - June 24 @ 4:30 pm

Free

Community Tampa Bay’s ANYTOWN® is a five-day, four-night residential leadership and advocacy education program that brings together 50 to 60 high schoolers, ages 13 to 18, of diverse cultural, ethnic, religious, and economic backgrounds to build a culturally diverse community from the ground up. Each ANYTOWN®session is staffed by 20 to 25 volunteers. The participants, or delegates, live, socialize and dine alongside each other throughout the course of the week. ANYTOWN® participants engage in a process that raises awareness and provides them with education and skills that allow them to move toward action-oriented behavior in the areas of identity, advocacy, and leadership. The issues the programs focus on include prejudice, discrimination, stereotypes, oppression, power, privilege, bias, bigotry, and the “isms.”

ANYTOWN® Goals:

• EXPERIENCE: Experience meaningful and diverse cross-cultural interactions.
• KNOW: Acquire knowledge regarding the impact, causes, and consequences of prejudice, stereotypes, and discrimination in our community.
• DIALOGUE: Engage in transformative dialogue to foster techniques and habits that promote empathy, deeper self-awareness, and respect for cultural differences.
• ASSESS: Assess personal identity development in order to achieve greater understanding and respect for self and how communities fit together.
• ADVOCATE: Envision and advocate for positive change in our communities through service.
• LEAD: Develop skills necessary to influence others and affect change in our communities.

ANYTOWN® has graduated over 9,000 delegates and engaged over 2,500 volunteers since it was founded in 1991. Community Tampa Bay partners with the Community-AID Lab at Michigan State University to evaluate the effectiveness of ANYTOWN®. The data reveals that:

– 100% of ANYTOWN® graduates experienced meaningful cross-cultural interactions;
– 98% reported gaining knowledge and skills to engage in service, advocacy, and leadership in schools or communities;
– 96% claimed to increase their comfort and ability to facilitate dialogue;
– 94% gained a stronger sense of social identity.
