Escaping the Heat to the Mountains of Murphy, North Carolina

Escaping the Heat to the Mountains of Murphy, North Carolina

Night shot of Airbnb log cabin in North Carolina with car parked in front

Murphy is located among the Blue Ridge Mountains of western North Carolina. It’s sort of hard to call it a town really– more like an intersection. It’s easy enough to travel between North Carolina, Tennessee and Georgia and the closest “big” town is Blue Ridge–A typical small tourist(ish) town with good restaurants and local shopping.

If coming from Florida, it’s likely less about sightseeing and more about escaping the heat. Cabin stays to enjoy cool days in the hot tub and cozy nights by the fire pit.

We’ve been there a few times. The first time we drove to stay with friends and the second, we flew Delta Airlines direct to Atlanta before renting a car for the xx hours to Murphy. Once you get past Atlanta traffic, the drive is not bad and Syxt was nice enough to upgrade us to a BMW 3 Series which was a pretty sweet drive. Perhaps with the growing popularity of the area, we’ll see smaller carriers start service to the Blue Ridge airport via Tampa.

Our first stay with friends was a cabin with an impeccable view.  Lucky Leaf Cabin fits eight guests with four bedrooms and a hot tub overlooking the mountains which seem almost surreal during the fall. It also has a well-done gameroom which is perfect for intergenerational fun with the fam.

Our second stay didn’t have the views but sported a wrap around screened in porch. Also with a hot tub, 2 bedrooms and a bath downstairs and a loft with bedroom and bath upstairs. There wasn’t a game room but a pinball machine we couldn’t figure out how to turn on. The fire was gas and really got cozy after just a few minutes.

If you want to be active, there are plenty of hiking and mountain biking options in the area. If you’re also looking to keep in leisurely, here’s a few places we enjoyed:

The Black Sheep — Located in the town of Blue Ridge, they have a full bar and eclectic brunch menu featuring dependable favorites and a few specialties including fried chicken with red velvet waffles.

Marietta Diner — After landing in Atlanta, we visited this highly acclaimed greasy spoon where you may wait about 20 minutes to get a table. Do yourself a favor and grab a menu as it will take you that long to read it. It’s typical diner food with a side of roadside kitsch.

Vineyard farm

Nottely River Valley Vineyards — There are a surprising number of wineries in the area. Located along the Nottely River, this is a great spot to grab a glass and take a stroll through the grape vines. The landscape is quite visually appealing.

Blue Ridge Olive Oil Company — With four locations in the area, this local company specializes in over 65 infused olive oil and balsamic vinegars.
