Deadly Rival Announces Harry Potter Roller Derby and Blood Drive

Deadly Rival Roller Derby is one of the best ways to spend a Saturday night in the Burg. The high-octane sport features some of the most badass women in the city pushing their passion to the limit on the city’s only banked track.

Gryffindor and Slytherin go head-to-head in the Sunshine City

On August 5, Deadly Rival takes a turn for the magical during a special Harry Potter-themed bout. The Gryffindor Gore will face off against the Slytherin Sin at The Slayground.

In addition to roller derby fun, the event also features an onsite food truck, a selection of free beer and wine — sorry, no butterbeer — and a halftime performance by Girl’s Rock Camp. Deadly Rival also partnered with Brown Paper Ticket for their Make ‘Em Bleed Blood Drive.

Special event will feature a blood drive

Spectators are invited to arrive early — 5-7pm — to donate blood. You can sign up to donate online. Tickets for the event are $12 online, or $15 at the door. Doors for the event officially open at 6pm.

Deadly Rival Roller Derby is an all-women’s league located in the Sunshine City.  Founded in 2011 and managed by Murder Ride and M. Pyre Wrecker, the league mounted its banked track in April 2015 at its home, The Slayground, 4033 35th Street North.

Rules of the roller derby

The rules are simple:  The contact sport is played by two teams of five members roller skating in the same direction around a track. Game play consists of a series of short match ups (jams) in which both teams designate a jammer who scores points by lapping members of the opposing team. The teams attempt to hinder the opposing jammer while assisting their own jammer—in effect, playing both offense and defense simultaneously.

The bout is played in two periods of thirty minutes. Scoring occurs during jams, which last up to two minutes. During a jam, points are scored when a jammer on a scoring pass (every pass a jammer makes through the pack after the initial pass) laps members of the opposing team.
