‘Burg Bits: Property Prices Inflated Improperly?

Strangely Escalating Property Values in Midtown

10 News reporter Noah Pransky uncovers allegations that property appraisers are making artificially high assessments in order to 
compel owners to sell their properties in the Dome Industrial Park area. The city is developing the area as part of an $85 million revitalization plan. One homeowner, whose property was appraised at $26,924, ended up with $145,000 plus closing costs.

Local Star Goes Hollywood

Winter, a prosthsesis-wearing bottlenose dolphin adopted by the Clearwater Marine Aquarium at three months old, is no longer just a local hero. Winter lost her tail after she became caught in a crab trap. Dolphin Tale, an upcoming 3D family drama inspired by Winter’s tail, er, tale stars Harry Connick Jr., Ashley Judd, and Morgan Freeman.

Muvico BayWalk 20 will be screening "Dolphin Tale" to benefit Polycystic Kidney Disease (PDK) Saturday September 24th, 2011 @ 2:00pm. For a $15 donation, you get a movie ticket, popcorn, soda, and a hot dog. All proceeds benefit PKD.


 

Glow & Tell for Expectant Mothers

Clothes for Kids Needs Sneakers for Boys
Recognizing that, truly, to look good is to feel good, Clothes for Kids aims to ensure every school-age child has access to "quality clothing so that he or she may attend school with the confidence and self-esteem needed to achieve academic success."  To that end, Clothes for Kids offers free shopping trips at their St. Petersburg and Clearwater stores for kids who qualify.  Clothes are arranged by size and type, and divided into four departments:  Girls, Boys, Young Men and Junior Girls.  The shop is bright and cheerful, and of course dressing rooms are provided. Shoppers must be pre-qualified, and shopping is by appointment only.

At the moment, the shop is short on boys’ sneakers; especially sizes 10 to 12. If you’re in possession of some, consider donating them. Clothes for Kids is located at 3251 3rd Ave. N, Suite 145, in St. Petersburg.

City Seeking Ambassadors to Japan
The city of St. Petersburg is looking for citizen ambassadors to join the city’s official delegation to our sister city in Japan, Takamatsu, this November 6 to 13. The international trip marks the 50th anniversary of our relationship with Takamatsu, like St. Petersburg, Takamatsu is a beautiful waterfront city. Located on the island of  Shikoku, it has a population of 419,361. Its most popular tourist attraction is the Ritsurin Garden, dating back to the Edo Period, when the first bonsai trees were cultivated.

The group will join Mayor Bill Foster in official ceremonies in Takamatsu on November 8 and 9. Ambassadors will also visit the "art island" of Naoshima. If you’d like to participate,  send a letter of interest and resume to the city’s Office of Arts and International Relations before September 20, 2011. You’ll need to pay your own expenses, about $3,500. Homestays with local families are available. For more information, call 727-893-7465.

Local Playwright Raises Funds

Lee Irby, best known for his novel 7,000 Clams, set in 1920’s St. Petersburg, is gathering funds to put his latest work on the stage. "Congratulations, Joe" is about an ordinary man who gets a job at a for-profit prison and proceeds to lose his mind. Lee describes "Joe" as "a dark comedy that mordantly explores the creeping criminalization of the U.S., the unchecked desire for power, and the relentless pursuit of fame." A Simple Theater plans to produce "Congratulations Joe" in the summer of 2012. The production is attracting funds through Kickstarter.com.
