Bead the ‘Burg: Local artist celebrates St. Pete icons with micro art

An inverted pyramid design building made of small beads

Bead the Burg is an absolute marvel. The concept says it’s building St. Pete pixel by pixel — and these beaded wonders are beyond charming. Lauren Fraser has given some of the city’s local icons the bead treatment.

DROP: I got lost on my way to @niagerliketiger ‘s place recently (which is easy for me bc I suffer from directional insanity). I found myself driving around aimlessly in Historic Roser Park. I fell in love with the bright purple neighborhood sign & the vibe🤙🏻 in general. I made a big piece first & then decided I haven’t given out a freebie in a while…so scroll to see it’s free-to-grab companion! Make sure you walk around the area if you go get it (& please tell us if it’s gone). Remember free art isn’t just for Friday! Major props to my photog (you can tell which one is hers) 📷: @liketigerco #beadtheburg #beadthebay #beads #freeartfriday #fafstpete #freeart #stpete #stpeterburg #stpetersburgfl #downtownstpete #dtsp #keepstpetelocal #ilovetheburg #visitstpeteclearwater #vspc #tampabay #perler #miniperler #perlerbeads #tinyart #freeartanyday #roserpark #historicroserpark

Beading ‘Burg icons

The inverted pyramid, the Banyan Motel sign, The Bends, the 600 Block, Pete’s General, and the Skyway have all been given the bead treatment. The art is lovely and strange and unique and embodies why I love this artsy community so much.

Fraser does free art drops for lucky residents on a rotating basis. Follow @beadtheburg on Instagram to keep up with the latest works hiding on the streets of St. Pete. Her latest drops was of a transfixing jellyfish along the St. Pete waterfront.

If you can’t wander around/wait for the next drop, you can browse a limited selection of beaded art on Fraser’s Etsy page.

Artist joins Drink + Draw series

The artist is participating in Green Bench‘s always popular Drink + Draw series. Fraser will lead a drawing session on February 11 from 7-9pm. She will discuss her craft and answer any questions local creatives might have about her beaded creations.

Back in March 2019, Fraser’s work was on display at MIZE Gallery on MLK Jr. Street during its MINI exhibition. The entire Bead the ‘Burg concept began as a project making beaded magnets for coworkers at Green Bench Brewing.

It’s since grown into my personal favorite St. Pete Instagram account. I still haven’t forgiven myself for missing the Parking Vehicle Keychain drop many months ago.

Make sure to follow Bead the ‘Burg on Instagram to see where she’ll drop a new piece of art next.

Celebrating what makes St. Pete special

The entire Drink + Draw series at Green Bench is free an open to the public, and each event runs from 7-9pm. Here’s the schedule:

Jan 21: Bailey Gumienny

Feb 11: Lauren Fraser

Mar 10: Kenny Coil

Apr 14: Melanie Posner

DROP: Hey guys! I’m back from a kinda-shortish hiatus. So the truth is I’m a fraud, I didn’t actually live in St. Pete this whole time 😱! I’ve been commuting back & forth from Largo to St. Pete 5 days a week.  But guess what?! I live here now AND yesterday was Bead the Burg’s one year anniversary! For this monumentous occasion I’m dropping this framed @thestatetheatre piece.  All I’m asking in return is that you tell some of your local friends to give me a follow, that’s it.  Now that my much much larger work space is set up I can start making new creations for you all to see & find and finally finish up some of my commission pieces 😬 (scroll through to see my new desk setup). And as always, make sure you let all of us know in the comments if you get to this dude first (this one is wrapped up this time). #beadtheburg #beadthebay #beads #freeartfriday #fafstpete #freeart #stpete #stpeterburg #stpetersburgfl #downtownstpete #dtsp #keepstpetelocal #ilovetheburg #visitstpeteclearwater #tampabay #perler #miniperler #perlerbeads #statetheatre #statetheatrestpete

This isn’t the only art happening you need to keep on your radar. The Museum of Fine Arts has a brand new exhibition that will see The Florida Orchestra take over multiple gallery spaces.
