School is almost back (how did summer go by so fast?), and to ease the return, a pair of local organizations have teamed up to provide free backpacks and school supplies for area children in need. Saturday Morning Shoppe and Live Love St. Pete are giving away 2,000 backpacks full of school supplies on Saturday, August 6, from 12-5 pm at Tropicana Field.

The giveaway is in conjunction with Saturday Morning Shoppe’s monthly market, and the partnership hopes to provide much-needed help for under-served schoolchildren in St. Pete and the surrounding areas. The giveaway is completely free, with no registration required. The only stipulation is that backpacks are given out on a first-come, first-served basis, so they are only available as long as supplies last.

“Our sole purpose is to give back to the community, allowing an opportunity to ease the economic strain associated with school starting back up,” said Renee Edwards, Founder of The Saturday Morning Shoppe.

Senator Darryl Rouson, through his employment at Rubenstein Law, is a sponsor of this backpack giveaway and said that they “are proud to be a part of this great event as we are keenly aware that these are difficult times for families and children may need some assistance in getting school supplies.”

2022 backpack giveaway will double the donation

Saturday Morning Shoppe hosted a similar giveaway last year, during which they gave away 1,000 backpacks in under three hours. Melody Proud, the founder of Live Love St. Pete, heard the news and pledged to donate an additional 1,000 backpacks this year with funds from the community-focused Live Love St. Pete shop.

“From the work I do with several Title 1 schools in St Pete, I’ve learned backpacks and school supplies are what the school children need most,” Proud said, “but the schools are not allowed to use grant funds to purchase them, so I wanted to help.”
