The newest sensation on the beaches is one for both the young and the young at heart. Atomic Claw Arcade, Tampa Bay’s first Japanese-style claw machine arcade, just opened on Treasure Island at 245 107th Ave, and it is already earning rave reviews.

The phenomenon got its start in Tokyo’s popular arcades and has since begun to spread across the globe. Unlike typical claw machines designed to get your money rather than give you a prize, this new style of machine is built to help you win. From stuffed animals and toys to candy and movie-themed treats, the claw machines are all chock full of great prizes for all ages.

Pinellas County’s first Japanese-style clawcade is a hit

The “clawcade” officially opened this February with more than 40 games, and the arcade full of bright lights and circles of machines is taking guests straight into the Tokyo state of mind. Already, guests are being given bags in order to carry all their prizes home with them.

Owner (and local) James Austin got the inspiration for Atomic Claw Arcade on a visit to Japan, when he saw the excitement these games created. He decided he wanted to bring that experience back with him and give Pinellas County a taste of the fun (and winnings).

A family-friendly delight on the beaches

While players aren’t likely to win on *every* attempt, Austin says the machines are designed so that most people should be able to snag a prize around on around 1 in every 3 attempts (as opposed to the 20:1 odds on standard claw machines). And with plays only costing $1 or $2 on most machines, those bags full of prizes can get filled up in a hurry.

Austin even has a system built in just in case you don’t get the prize you have your heart set on. Guests are able to trade multiple smaller prizes for larger prizes, meaning everyone can go home with their dream toy.

Atomic Claw Arcade has seen huge crowds every day since its soft open, and they are now open Wednesday-Sunday, welcoming guests in for games and fun. Current hours are Monday – Friday 3pm – 8pm; Saturday 12pm – 8pm; and Sunday 12pm – 6pm.

Atomic Claw Arcade also takes reservations for birthday parties and private events. Learn more at atomicclaw.com and be sure to follow Atomic Claw on instagram for the latest.
