Preview: Urban Creamery Offers Unique Ice Cream Flavors, Belgian Waffles

Andy Salyards has become a well-known fixture in the foodie community. Urban Brew and BBQ, after finishing its beer garden, just began an expansion and Urban Comfort has come into full form as its shuffleboard courts have just recently been installed. Salyards and crew also poured their first Urban Brand brew, the Urban Hefeweizen.

There are two more spots you need to know about: Urban Provisions and, soon-to-open, Urban Creamery.

Urban Provisions is a Brooklyn-style deli with a bare-bones old west aesthetic. The walls are lined with shelves upon shelves of local and national beers. At Provisions you have the "you pick six" option, which lets you mix and match your favorite beers, or the ones you are most curious about, into one pack.

Aside from the beer, Provisions may be one of the best damn deli's we've ever visited. We sampled their house-cured roast beef with their hand-made mustard and pickles. Next time we're making it a point to experience the Pork Loin, a customer favorite.

Salyards and business partner Alex Brandt say that Provisions is a central point of distribution for both Comfort and Brew & BBQ. The sauces, sides, rubs and meats you've enjoyed at either restaurant can be purchased found there.

For those looking to get their fill of St. Petersburg Brewing Co., 3 Daughters Brewing and others, Provisions provides growler fills. They also screen movies all day, every day. You can enjoy actions films on Monday, the classics on Tuesday, sci-fi flicks on Saturday and critically acclaimed films on Sunday. Click here for a full movies list.

If you're in the need for some really good, homemade bacon or beef jerky, we suggest you vist soon. Urban Provisions is located at 2410 Central Avenue.

Being an inexhaustible entrepreneur, Salyards has one more foodie offering for St. Pete to salivate over. Urban Creamery, an old-school ice cream shop, is coming to the 600 Block soon, potentially within the next 4 weeks.

Creamery took over the space formerly occupied by Niryasa at 689 Central Avenue. The roughly 750 square foot shop will feature indoor and outdoor seating (40 seats total) and will have a rotating list of 6 unique ice cream flavors. Salyards and Brandt mentioned two that immediately caught our attention: Sea Salt Chocolate Chip and Honey Thyme Lavender. You'll also be able to indulge in Belgian Yeast Waffles and shakes.

In the same fashion that Provisions distributes meats, grains and sides to Comfort and Brew & BBQ, Creamery will provide desserts for both restaurants.

With Cider Press, Hyppo, The Lure, the soon-to-open Central Melt and Urban Creamery, not to mention Banyan Cafe just one block over, the 600 Block is blossoming into a true culinary destination in St. Pete. The additions of Publix, a 3-story parking garage and the Chihuly Collection in the near future have helped fuel the drive to open on this section of Central Avenue.

It's quite remarkable to witness the growth of Urban since the BBQ restaurant just a couple of years ago in the Grand Central District. When asked why he's so driven to grow and expand, Salyards said "I want the Urban Brand to be a platform for others to pursue their goals." That philosophy has allowed him to attract some of the rising minds in St. Pete. "We've become a kind of incubator," added Brandt.

The expertly marinated ideas coming from both of them have found continued success with the mantra, do it good, do it right
