‘Burg Night Out: Stokerc

‘Burg Night Out: Stokerc

Muvico at The Shops at St. Pete in downtown St. Pete presents… Stoker tonight, at 7:05pm, you and a guest have a chance to see it FREE! Plus, free popcorn… if you win, that is.

India Stoker’s life is uprooted when her father and best friend (Dermot Mulroney) are killed in a car accident. Her once peaceful existence takes an even darker turn when she discovers she has an Uncle Charlie (Matthew Goode) who, for whatever reason, was never mentioned by anyone in her family before his arrival. At first Uncle Charlie fills the void in India’s heart from the death of her father and best friend. India doesn’t even seem to mind when Uncle Charlie moves in with her and starkly unstable mother (Nicole Kidman). Nor does she become concerned when she suspects Uncle Charlie of ulterior motives. And why should she? India is falling in love…

This film received a rating of 73% from the audience on Rotten Tomatoes. Peter Travers of RollingStone describes it as "a hothouse of erotic tension that’s primed to explode. Some will find it too much. Screw them. Park’s goal is to bust form, not conform to it. A thriller of savage beauty." Keywords for this movie according to IMDB include "belt-strangling" and "mother/daughter jealousy", so this movie is not for the younger sect. However if you’re looking for a "a beautifully twisted, slow-burning psychothriller" (Stephen Rea, The Philidelphia Inquirer) "Stoker" may be the dark fix you’ve been looking for.

After India’s (Mia Wasikowska’s) father dies in an auto accident, her Uncle Charlie (Matthew Goode), who she never knew existed, comes to live with her and her emotionally unstable mother Evelyn (Nicole Kidman). Soon after his arrival, she comes to suspect this mysterious, charming man has ulterior motives, but instead of feeling outrage or horror, this friendless girl becomes increasingly infatuated with him.
