Bike Ride for Kerouac

Bike Ride for Kerouac

"I hope it is true that a man can die and yet not only live in others but give them life, and not only life, but that great consciousness of life."
Jack Kerouac

To read the rough, rambling, philisophical and poetic words of Jack Kerouac is an experience of obfuscation, self-reflection and unadulterated ecstasy. He was a writer who existed under the veiled affectations of alcohol, promiscuity and bucolic desires. What was myth and what was man may never be known but the enigmatic aura surrounding the beat author is one to envy and admire.

Friends of the Jack Kerouac House, a Burg-based group dedicated to preserving the literary history of St. Pete, have put together a bike tour of the spots the beatnik made legendary during his time living in St. Pete. The Godfather of the beats and incendiary madman lived in the Burg from 1966 to 1969. Kerouac passed away on October 21, 1969 at St. Anthony's Hospital.

The purpose of the ride is to ignite and illuminate the final years of the irreverent wayfarer's life. "There were so many facets to his life here which haven't been explored yet, and we hope this ride brings about a greater understanding of his gone life, his professional aspirations and his later writings," said Margaret Murray.

The roadster ride takes place on May 18 and ends at the infamous kelly green Flamingo Bar & Grill where Kerouac reportedly drank his last cocktail. The tour will take participants through downtown to beloved literary bastions including Haslam's bookstore and the police department's holding cell, now a storage unit, where Kerouac spent a solitary Thanksgiving night in '64. The tour will make an inevitable pit stop in front of Kerouac's Home with an accompanying narrative detailing the history and significance of the man beyond the myth and persona.

The 2 hour ride will end with an after party at the Flamingo featuring WMNF's IndieFM DJ Katarina Lauver, food trucks and Kerouac memorabilia. The ride was conceived by Margaret Murray as her graduate thesis. She is collaborating with the brilliant Berlin Poet Gregor Weichbrodt, who translated the entire 17k+ mile route of On The Road into Google Maps as part of his Ph.D. thesis. The immense work will be on display at the Flamingo during the ride's after-party.

All proceeds will go to Friends of the Jack Kerouac House, Inc., a local organization working to maintain and preserve the Kerouac home. The ride takes place on May 18 and begins at 11am at The Flamingo Bar 1230 9th St. N.
